| Welcome to the STRIVE/Peer
Tutoring Webpage! The program was started in 1995 and our primary
purpose is to serve the community of Lafayette. To date, we have
donated over 120,000 pounds of food to the Community and Family Resource
Center and our members have volunteered a cumulative total of over 115,000
service hours!
The STRIVE program consists of two separate classes. The Peer Tutoring class meets during Red-2 and Black-2 (and can be taken during other hours with permission from Mr. Fitz, the guidance department, and parents). Students choosing to enroll in this course will be expected to find a teacher within the school system and ask for permission to serve as a peer tutor in that teacher's classroom. In addition to completing a minimum of fifty (50) service hours, students must complete 15 weekly journals, a pre- and post-service paper, and a final project. Students wishing to enroll must also understand they are expected to participate in fundraising efforts. This course may be taken for credit, up to and including, six (6)different semesters. The Service Learning class meets during Black-4 (and can be taken during other hours with permission from Mr. Fitz, the guidance department, and parents). Students choosing to enroll in this course will be expected to choose an area of social concern and then design their own project that will meet a community need. In addition to completing a minimum of fifty (50) service hours, students must complete 15 weekly journals, a pre- and post-service paper, and a final project. Students wishing to enroll must also understand they are expected to participate in fundraising efforts. This course may be taken for credit, up to and including, six (6) different semesters. Students enrolling in this course will discover that we are actively involved in activities such as the American Heart Association HeartWalk, Lafayette Urban Ministry Hunger Hike, American Diabetes Association Walk, Lymphoma and Leukemia Foundation's "Light The Night" Walk, Alzheimer Association Memory Walk, Winter Food Drive, March of Dimes, Homeless Hike, and Penny Harvest. The class may also participate in other projects depending on the interest level of the students. We also sponsor a Salvation Army "Angel Tree" and blood drives for the Indiana Blood Center. Members are not required to participate in all events, but they may choose to participate in as many events as they like. If you are interested in contacting our class with service learning opportunities or in sending donations (cash or various items needed for projects) that will enable us to continue with our mission, please contact Mr. Fitz at drfitzgerald@lsc.k12.in.us Thank you for helping us make a difference in our community!
