How do I borrow library books?

The Circulation Desk is located just beyond the main entrance of the library. Your student ID will be needed to check out a book. It will be scanned electronically, and your name will be entered into our computer as the person who has that book. You may keep a book for 2 weeks.  You may have up to 5 books checked out at any one time.

What are my responsibilities when I check out library materials?

When you check out materials from the library, you agree to take care of them so that they will be in good shape for the next user. You also agree to return or renew them on time.  If you have any overdue books, you may not check out any more books until they are returned or paid for.  You will be charged the full, current replacement cost of a book if you damage it or lose it. Remember that these materials are purchased with the community's tax dollars. Treat them as if you bought them yourself!

Where do I return materials?

When the library is open, you should return materials to the circulation desk. Drop them in the slot if the library is closed.

How do I find books and things?

Your greatest resource for locating books and other resources in the library is the staff. Please feel free to ask the staff questions. Helping you find information is an important part of their jobs. The staff can help you use the computer catalog browser to find books and other resources available to you in the library.

What if a book is not on the shelf or the library doesn't own it?

If a book is not on the shelf, check with the staff. They can tell you if it is somewhere else, checked out, or missing. There is a suggestion box in the library for suggesting books you would like us to have.

What kinds of things do you have for children?

We have a small children's library available to students and staff. Not only are these books used by child development classes but also by students doing practice teaching and community service with children’s groups.

Can I check out music or videos?

Music and video materials are available only for staff members to check out. However, if you are absent and need to “make up” seeing a film for class, you may do so in the library. We will set you up with the film, a television, and a VCR or DVD player. You may then view the film in the library work area.  It is a good idea to plan ahead and tell us when you will be coming to the library to view the film.

Can I access the library catalog from home?

The online research databases to which the library subscribes are available to students at home. Log-in information and passwords to access the databases are available from the librarian.  However, at this time the library collection catalog is not available online.

How much are photocopies?

For reference materials that cannot be checked out of the library, we will copy up to six pages free. For copies of anything other than reference materials, the charge is ten cents per photocopy page. We also offer binding service, which is two dollars per binding job.

Does the library have a wish list of items they need?

We can use old magazines, especially ones with a lot of photos. Teachers and students often cut them up for creating projects.  Study hall teachers also like to provide them for study hall reading.  If you have used paperback books (school-appropriate ones) that you’d like to be rid of, we can put them on our “free books” cart for students to take.
Back to FAQ questions

Can I check out magazines?

Magazines and newspapers cannot be checked out. However, photocopies can be made, up to six pages for free.
Back to FAQ questions

Does the library provide any kind of computer training or internet training?

The school librarian will help classes or individual students with word processing, PowerPoint, and internet research databases available on the computers.   She also can assist with analyzing and evaluating web sites for research.
Back to FAQ questions

Can I place a reserve on materials?

Teachers and students may reserve materials. Teachers need to let the librarian know, in advance, what is needed. She will make a reserve cart with the teacher's name on it and the length of time the materials will be reserved. Students may place their names on a reserve list for books at the circulation desk.
Back to FAQ questions

Does the library need any volunteers?

The library uses student volunteers who are recommended by our guidance counselors and approved by the librarian or library assistant. Adult community volunteers are also welcome and need to contact the librarian if interested; adult volunteer hours are flexible.
Back to FAQ questions

How do I reserve space in the library?

Only staff members may reserve space in the library. They need to contact one of the library staff, either in person or by phone or email, to be put on the library schedule. This includes reserving computer labs in the library.

What do students need to do to visit the library?

In all cases, students must first be wearing their IDs. Before and after school, students may come in freely, but they must check in and out on an attendance sheet at the circulation desk.  During the school day, students will need a hall pass from one of their teachers to enter the library. This includes during lunch.  Exception:  To come to the library during fourth period study hall, students and early release students must come to the library before the end of third period and request a special library study hall pass. At all times of the day, students who enter the library must leave their hall passes at the circulation desk and sign in, then pick up their passes when leaving and sign out.

How can I use the computers in the library?

Teachers have first priority in reserving and using the library computer labs for their classes. When classes are not using the computers, other students may use them, including before school. Students must have an internet permission form on file with the school, and they must use the computers only for class assignments.  Just like any other library materials, students are expected use the computers respectfully and with care and to honor the internet permission form agreement.
